MJW Supports NASA’s Artemis Program

Fire Protection Systems Special Hazards Systems Aviation and Automotive

As NASA advances the Artemis program and its goal of returning humans to the Moon, the rocket launch infrastructure plays a critical role in mission success. One of the most significant elements of this infrastructure is  Mobile Launcher 2 (ML2), a massive and highly sophisticated structure designed to support future Artemis missions.  MJW was selected to design, build and commission in use complex Fire Protection, Fire Alarm, Launch Cooling and Post-launch Washdown systems for ML2. Larger and considerably more complex than NASA’s current mobile launcher, the 377-feet-tall launch platform will provide the support needed to assemble, transport, test and safely launch the Block 1B configuration of NASA’s Space Launch System rocket beginning with the Artemis IV mission.

MJW’s involvement in this project started in 2021 with a significant engineering and design effort that was followed by intricate procurement and fabrication tasks tightly schedule to achieve for on-time delivery to the installation crews that executed their work within a demanding, multi-discipline construction environment. Installing  mechanical and electrical systems on a structure of this scale presents unique challenges requiring constant focus on safe, quality work execution at height.  Vertical logistics, limited access, tight installation windows, and dense system coordination all add complexity beyond that of a conventional building project.

MJW’s extensive experience with complex installations—especially on projects requiring work at height—has proven instrumental in overcoming these challenges. By emphasizing constructability, disciplined installation practices, and strong coordination with other trades, MJW has successfully navigated the unique demands of ML2 construction.

Through our hard work, MJW is protecting NASA’s critical launch infrastructure and operating personnel, supporting Artemis deep space exploration mission from the ground up.
