Along the First Coast of Florida and Georgia, the effects of Hurricane Matthew are still being felt and addressed.

Since mid-November 2018, MJW Consolidated has been carrying out a major plumbing and mechanical renovation at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia, just outside of Brunswick.

Operated by the Department of Homeland Security, the Glynco center provides training for customs and border patrol personnel, along with federal marshals, and local and county law enforcement officers.

Dormitories at the facility sustained heavy flood damage during the hurricane, resulting in the need to totally renovate and upgrade the plumbing and mechanical systems for the buildings.

“The dormitories are built in the older motel style, with the air conditioning units underneath the windows, what we call PTAC, or package terminal air conditioning,” explained Ralph Harrison, MJW project manager.

He added, “We’re replacing 125 of those units, as well as 70 tubs and 130 bar sinks that were damaged by the flooding.”

Another 70 split units serving multiple rooms that were located outside the rooms at ground floor level are being replaced with new units on platforms that are four feet off the ground.

Harrison expects the project to be completed by the end of June.

The FLETC is based at an old Navy base, the Glynco Naval Air Station, that opened in 1942 and housed blimps that were sent up and down the Atlantic coast to monitor for German U-boat activity during World War II.
