GP Palatka PM4 Roof Replacement – Breathing New Life into a Legacy Structure

The PM4 building is one of the oldest structures at GP Palatka, and its 24,000-square-foot roof has taken the full force of Florida’s weather for decades. After years of patching and temporary repairs, GP determined it was time for a complete replacement. Following a competitive bid process, MJW was selected from eight contractors to lead this high-risk, high-precision project.

Working directly above an active production area, safety and control were critical. Using large cranes, heavy rigging, and methodical sequencing, MJW removed roof panels, corroded beams, and three failed 100-foot trusses—each piece lifted carefully through a maze of ducts, piping, and operational machinery.

Midway through the work, summer storms and intense heat created challenges. The team adapted by installing protective subdeck systems, deploying poly curtains, adding high-velocity fans, and increasing inspection frequency to keep the area watertight and crews safe.

When complete, the project will include:

  • 50+ tons of new structural steel
  • 24,000 sq. ft. of stainless steel roof decking
  • Two rebuilt penthouse sections
  • New stair tower and doghouse access
  • 14,000 sq. ft. of wall siding removed and replaced
  • 4,300+ damaged structural members demolished
  • Three 100-ft truss replacements
  • Full lead-paint abatement and new three-part coating system
  • 240+ squares of modified bitumen roofing

The PM4 roof replacement is scheduled for an 18-month duration. Now in month eleven, MJW is actively progressing and trending slightly ahead of schedule—delivering renewed strength and reliability to one of the mill’s most important legacy structures.
