Fire Protection Solutions for Crane Replacement at Reworld Energy
Late in 2023, Reworld Energy approached MJW with a complex challenge at their Pasco Fla facility. Inside the charging deck—a tall structure where cranes transport trash from the pit to the hoppers that feed the boiler burners—aging cranes needed to be removed and replaced. These boilers generate the steam that drives turbines to produce electricity, making the cranes a critical part of power generating operations.
The only way to remove the old cranes and install new ones was to open a section of the roof, a process that would take several months. However, the charging deck is considered a high-hazard area, and its sprinkler system needed to remain in service at all times. Complicating matters further, the sprinklers themselves were located in the very path through which the cranes would need to be extracted through the roof.
Our design team reviewed the existing fire protection system and developed a solution that would allow work to move forward without compromising safety. The plan involved rerouting the sprinkler mains to the outside of the building columns and adjusting branch lines to provide sufficient clearance needed for the crane removal.
The project unfolded in two phases. First, scaffolding was constructed above the crane rails to give our crews safe access to relocate the mains and branch lines. Building and managing this elevated platform was a challenge in itself, but with the support of our subcontractor, the team created a secure workspace that allowed the modifications to move ahead safely. Once the new cranes were in place, the second phase began—reworking the sprinkler system to integrate with the updated structure and restore full protection to the charging deck.
Through close coordination with the entire project team, the project was completed smoothly and without incident. The customer was very satisfied with the results, highlighting our strong focus on safety and the smooth execution of a complex project.
At MJW, we take pride in delivering solutions that not only meet technical demands but also maintain the highest standards of safety and performance.
