Cabot Corporation Expansion – Fire Protection & Life Safety Systems
At the Cabot Corporation facility in Ville Platte, innovation and sustainability are driving the next phase of growth. The site, known for manufacturing carbon black—a critical material that enhances the durability of tires and rubber products across the United States—underwent a major expansion designed to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
This new system captures waste energy from the production process, converting it into steam through incineration, removing impurities, and ultimately generating electricity to help power ongoing operations. Supporting a project of this scale required robust and reliable life safety systems.
Contracted by Cajun Industries, MJW was responsible for delivering the fire sprinkler, fire suppression, and fire alarm systems for the expansion. The scope included sprinkler protection for critical areas such as lube oil skids and the Steam Turbine Generator Enclosure, along with the installation of three HFC-227ea clean agent suppression systems—two in electrical buildings and one in a central control room. Fire alarm devices were also installed throughout the facility to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Work began in January 2025 and reached completion by the end of the year, with careful coordination required during periods when crews were off-site. Despite the complexity, the project was executed safely and on schedule.
One of the more demanding aspects of the project involved installing large HFC-227ea suppression cylinders in elevated electrical buildings. By leveraging the site’s crane to lift the cylinders onto the platforms and utilizing a gantry crane for precise placement inside the structures, the team was able to safely and efficiently complete the installation.
Another key challenge involved coordinating with a subcontracted electrical contractor responsible for conduit and wire pulls. Aligning installation efforts with MJW’s system design required close collaboration and active field management. Through strong communication and oversight from the project team and alarm foreman, the work was completed seamlessly and without incident.
The finished system delivers a fully integrated fire protection and life safety system that supports a cutting-edge energy recovery process, ensuring safe, reliable operations for years to come. This project stands as a testament to effective coordination, technical expertise, and a commitment to delivering high-quality results in complex industrial environments.
