Advancing Clean Energy: Triso-X Oak Ridge Project

Engineering Fire Protection Systems Fabrication Power and Energy

In Oak Ridge, Tennessee—an area rich in history and nuclear innovation—Triso-X, a subsidiary of X-energy, is leading the charge in clean energy development with North America’s first commercial-scale advanced nuclear fuel facility. The completed facility is designed to produce up to five metric tons of advanced nuclear fuel each year, paving the way for safer, more efficient, and carbon-free power generation.

The project unfolded across three major phases. MJW was awarded Phase 1 in partnership with Geiger Brothers, Inc., and successfully installed a 12-inch underground fire water loop—a crucial system for the facility’s safety infrastructure. Our team’s scope included the installation of fire hydrants, Post Indicator Valves (PIVs), and in-building risers for both the T-1 and Administration Buildings.

This five-month effort was completed and fully tested by the middle of the fourth quarter in 2025. One of the key challenges during construction was coordinating closely with Geiger Brothers, who were responsible for excavation work. Through strong field communication and proactive planning, MJW crews ensured smooth progress, aligning excavation and piping installation activities to keep the project on schedule.

Subsequent phases focused on building foundations, the facility’s exterior envelope, and the complex mechanical buildout, bringing the project to full production scale. With Clarke Construction leading Phase 2A and contributing to later phases, MJW is proud to have supported this groundbreaking project and its role in shaping the future of nuclear fuel production in the United States.
